Syllabus

The syllabus is set by the Driving Standards Agency and all professional driving instructors will follow this programme. All subjects will be covered and fully understood by the time you take your driving test.

It is recommended that you take at least 2 hours a week in order to make good progress, having just one hour a week could mean it may take as much as a year to reach the required standard to pass.

The amount of training hours required to attain the skills necessary to pass the test can differ from pupil to pupil. Generally, between 30 – 40 hours driving is an average guideline.

The subjects covered are

  • Cockpit drill including ancillary controls
  • Moving off and stopping using Mirror-Signal-Manoeuvre routine
  • Dealing with other vehicles ie meeting, crossing paths and overtaking
  • Controlled Stops
  • Reversing left/right into a minor road
  • Reverse parking into a space behind another parked vehicle
  • Turning the car around in the road using forward and reverse gears
  • Reversing into a parking bay
  • Correct road procedures
  • Hill starts and moving off at an angle
  • Making good progress, hesitancy, normal driving position
  • Anticipation of the actions of other road users and taking appropriate action
  • Emerging junctions left/right
  • Approaching junctions left/right
  • Crossroads
  • Dealing with pedestrian crossings
  • Use of signals
  • Use of mirrors
  • Dealing with cyclists
